Synthetic stucco siding was popularized in the 1950s after the war when people started to realize how simply and inexpensively it could be used on damaged buildings. Synthetic stucco siding or EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems) is made It's made of lightweight, two inch thick polystyrene panels. The panels are coated with an acrylic coating made to look like traditional stucco. It can be difficult to tell the difference. The best way is by the sound. Synthetic stucco siding is soft and makes a hollow sound when it is tapped, whereas traditional stucco siding feels hard and sounds solid when tapped.

One of the primary advantages of synthetic stucco siding (EIFS) is that it is lighter weight than traditional stucco. The main pro here is that it is a cost-effective option and less expensive than traditional stucco. Another benefit of synthetic stucco is that it is faster to apply and can be done with a base coat and a finishing coat, instead of the traditional method of adding three layers. Another advantage to synthetic stucco is that it retains paint finishes better than traditional stucco.
